What is ECMAA

ECMAA is a not-for profit tax exempt, non-political, and non-sectarian organization dedicated to the welfare of Ethiopians in the United States.

OBJECTIVE

The Ethiopian Community Mutual Assistance Association (ECMAA) was chartered on July 10, 1981 under the laws of the State of New York as a response to the growing need out our community in the United States

The primary objective of ECMAA as stipulated in its Bylaws are:

- To bring together all Ethiopians into a voluntary union to represent and collectively advance the economic and social well-being of our community;
- To provide assistance and increasingly develop the organizational capacity to resolve the immediate and long-range problems facing Ethiopians in the United States;
- To further identify needs and expand our assistance programs in the areas of immigration and welfare;
- To preserve Ethiopian culture in order to both nurture our national and historical identity and to promote understanding with the community at large;
- To develop and strengthen relationships with similar mutual assistance associations and other organizations with can be of assistance to our community; and
- To strengthen communications among all Ethiopians in accordance with the objectives herein.

Most people's idea of Ethiopia is dated circa 1984, when a famine killed around a million of its people. But things have changed. Although its GDP is still a meager $13.3 billion in a country of nearly 77 million, it has been growing by more than 9% a year since 2003. Chinese engineers have found oil in its eastern deserts. Exports of coffee and roses are rising by more than 20% each year. ~ Time.com
